Brief History

Jumaikela is a village situated in the North East of Chattisgarh. It is in the district of Jashpur. It is surrounded by hills, fields and mountain ranges with its green woods adding beauty to the land. Jumaikela was a part of the parish of Jokbahala which was given to the Salesians in 1979 by the diocese of Jashpur.

The seed of Christianity was planted in this area by veteran missionary Fr. Livens Constantine S.J. who came to India in 1880 from Belgium. His zeal for Christ’s Kingdom was beyond compare. Many villages accepted Christ and his massage and remained ever faithful to it.

The Salesians came to Jumaikela at the invitation of the Bishop of Raigarh, Rt. Rev. Victor Kindo and was given land to build the Church residence etc to develop the mission. Jumaikela which was part of Jokbala parish was constituted as a parish in 1989. Fr. Francis Vadakan SDB was the first parish Priest. He felt the need of the presence of the Salesian Sisters to co-operate with him in the work of evangelization, working in the already established primary and middle school.

The official invitation was given to the Provincial by Bishop Rt. Rev.Victor Kindo to come to his diocese and to implant our charism. The invitation was joyfully welcomed by the Provincial and her council. On 27th Jan. 1989 Sr. Mary George U., Sr. Rose Ezarath and Sr. Mary Ekka came from Kolkata to start new Mission in Jumaikela. They were accompanied by Mother Provincial Sr.Genevieve Battigelli and Sr.Gemma Libralesso the Provincial Economer.
