Brief History of the House | The house was started in 1988 during the Provincialship of Sr.Genevieve Battigelli at he request of the then Bishop of Jalpaiguri.Three Sisters: Sr.Rose Kureekattu : Animator of the house; Sr.Clara Martin: in charge of the School and Sr.Jyoti Baxla : for apostolate. The Sisters stayed in the little house which was previously occupied by the Priest in charge of Prabhat Tara Parish. Apart from catering to the children in the School, the Sisters began to visit the families around and made acquaintance with them. The resience for the Sisters was completed in 1989 in time for the Canonical Visitation of Sr.Georgina McPake and her Secretary Sr.Valerie Jackson. In the course of time more Sisters were sent to meet the demands of the apostolate. |
History of the School | An English Medium School run by the Diocese under the name of St.Anthony’s School was already existing. The three sisters took charge of the School from June 1988.There were around 50 childen from Classes Nursery to V. All were accomodated in one large class room. In October 1988 the foundation for the foundation for the School building was laid. The building was completed for the beginning of the next Scholastic year. The children were from the nearby tea gardens. In 2003 the work for the recognition began .The school obtained recognition and in 2006 the first batch of students wrote ICSE Exams. From then on there was no looking back. The number began to increase slowly. In 2008 a School bus was purchased; then a second one in 2009. This gave riase to the number of students from outside Jaigaon vicinity. In 2010 the first group of students wrote ISC examinations and result was commendable. Today the School caters to more than a thousand students of both sexes from all walks of life. |
No Students | 1086 |
History of Boarding | Soon after the arrival of the sisters they began to receive girls in the boarding. They were from the nearby tea gardens. Once the new School building which could accommodate a larger number was built in 1998 the number of boarders increased. Their number fluctuate between 120 and 90.They are from all categories of life. |
No Boarders | 85 |
Pastoral Intervention | From the beginning the Sisters were involved in family visiting; preparing people for the Sacraments; animating the association of the Women and Youth; caring to the decorum of the Church etc. Since they were the only Religious women in the locality they made sure that they were present for all the activities of the Parish. |
Social Ministry - VTC/SHG | The Sisters were attentive to the needs of the people of the locality. They visisted the houses and aencouraged parents to send their children to our school and receive education. They also began the evening coaching class and oratory youth centre. Since the SHG groups under the umbrella of the Government was already in existence, they did not involve themselves in it. |
Past Pupils’ Association | The Past Pupils Association was started in 1995 during the time of Sr.Elizabeth Joseph. But as most of the students had to leave the area for further education it was difficult to gather the past upils and slowly the strength of the association weakened and came to non existence. The Assocation was renewed in 2009 with the effort of Sr.Mary Ann Abraham and though still the same situation prevails we can say the group is functioning with a few members. A few are very active in the area where they are caring for the needy and the marginalised young people |
Women’s Empowerment | The Sisters work as animators of the Women’s Association. We are few in number and are loaded with School apostolate and the care of the girls in the boarding; so it is difficult to be full time animators. |
